I have been working as a ceramicist for a about five years. After studying at various workshops and the city college, I set up my own studio in a converted shed that opens onto a small garden behind my home, an 1874 row house located on Chicago’s Near West Side.
Because I am still exploring my craft, I enjoy trying out new methods and techniques. Thus I view the world through a lens seeking pattern, color and form. I work alternately on the wheel and by hand building, and most recently have produced flat work: tiles, tile murals, and mosaics. I give a lot of attention to the design and surface treatment of each piece, using mostly underglaze for the bright colors that can be achieved. Surfaces are often detailed and painterly with reference to different cultural traditions where I have traveled, including Mayan textiles of Guatemala, Iznik pottery from Turkey and majolica from Spain. I also draw upon themes from nature, but adapt them to modern designs. Most of my work is first bisque fired and then glaze fired to cone 05.
I am always appreciative when someone looks at and enjoys my work. Thank you for visiting.
